As a woman veteran who served during the Vietnam War, Memorial Day is not distant to me.
It arrives with faces, voices, and absences.
Some never came home.
Others came home bearing wars that never truly ended.
Time, even still, has not erased the memory of those who stood their post beneath impossible conditions, nor the quiet, yet steadfast courage carried by so many whose service was rarely seen or spoken of.
Today I pause for the fallen—
and for the sacred honor of remembering them well.

The Final Horizon
Some surrendered their lives in an instant.
Others gave them away slowly beneath the weight of duty.
They stood where the world broke open
So life could continue abroad.
Memorial Day is for remembrance.
A reckoning with the cost of freedom.
To the fallen, I offer more than grief.
Let me live awake—with courage, with character,
A life worthy of the sacrifice carried by my brothers and sisters.
Let their finest monument be my personal standard.
