Lessons from Nature’s Cycles

By Louise Sutherland-Hoyt

I wrote this piece long before sharing it. At the time, it needed to live quietly, still unfolding in me. Spring has a way of asking for emergence before everything is ready, and I knew this reflection required a longer season of trust. So I let it rest—through uncertainty, through silence, through change—until it felt honest to offer it outward. This post arrives now not because the moment is perfect, but because the understanding behind it has settled. Louise

Change rarely arrives gently. Sometimes it comes as a quiet unraveling, other times as a sudden collapse of what once felt solid. In these moments, the mind searched high and low for answers, timelines, and reassurance. But my soul often asks a different question: Can you trust what is happening, even now? Historically, trust has not been my strong suit. I knew I would have to keep trying. And so I did.

The caterpillar does not evolve by improvement. It dissolves. Inside the cocoon, its former self breaks down completely, surrendering shape, certainty, and identity. From the outside, it appears like an ending. From within, it is intelligence at work.

We experience similar seasons. Old roles fall away. Beliefs loosen. What once defined us no longer fits. This can feel like failure, but, as I have learned, it often shows up as initiation. A holy undoing. Life clearing space for something truer to emerge.

Do not equate surrender with weakness. It is reverence. Humility. It is the willingness to stop arguing with the moment and abide instead. To loosen the grip of desire to force outcomes and allow transformation to move at its own rhythm.

The cocoon phase is uncomfortable because it offers no proof. No wings yet. No clarity. Only trust. But not all growth is meant to be witnessed while it is happening. Some changes require darkness, stillness, and time beyond understanding.

When life begins to rearrange you, it may not be asking you to do more. It may be asking you to soften. To rest your grip. To remember that the same wisdom that shapes rivers and seasons is also shaping you.

You are not broken. You are not lost. You may simply be between forms.

And if nature can be trusted with the miracle of transformation, I know that I can trust it here, too.
