Have You Said This?

7 Reasons Why Saying You Just Don’t Get It
Is Intellectual Arrogance in Disguise

By Louise Sutherland-Hoyt

There’s a special kind of smugness wrapped in these five little words: You just don’t get it. I’ll readily admit that I’ve tossed this out there in times when I was all out of ammo and needed a last-ditch line to have the last word. How Supercilious of me. But then, those were the days flavored with narcissism and low-road judgment.

If you’ve heard it before, you know the sting. If you’ve said it, maybe you meant well. But here’s the thing: it’s not a conversation starter. It’s a full stop. A shutdown. And it says more about the speaker than the listener.

Let’s shine a big ole klieg light on this phrase and call it what it often is: a dog whistle for an over-sized ego. I have to admit that I am guilty of this act of flagrant arrogance and contempt for opinions contrary to my own.

1. It’s What You Say When You’ve Got Nothing Better

Truth be told, “you just don’t get it” is the go-to line when you see that you have failed to articulate your point. It’s lazy. It’s the same as pulling rank or playing the guru card. Your argument doesn’t pass the smell test, it needs more work, but you just can’t bear the thought of being wrong. Real intelligence and wisdom don’t hide behind vague superiority—they get their hands dirty and get humble.

2. It Reeks of Self-Importance

Straight up. You just don’t get it, elevates you to a higher plane. but only in your lofty imagination. It’s not a bridge—it’s a wall. It’s not going to change minds, and most assuredly will come back to bite you. In proper discourse, there’s no room for peacocking. People will smell your superiority a mile away, and they’ll just snap shut to your silly story.

3. It Kills Curiosity on the Spot

One of the biggest tragedies in communication is shutting someone down right when they’re leaning in. Curiosity is fragile. Drop a “you just don’t get it” in the middle of a conversation, and you’ve slammed the door in their face. If your goal is growth—yours or theirs—you’ve got to keep the door open, even when it gets uncomfortable.

4. It’s an Emotional Reflex Disguised as Depth

Too often, that phrase isn’t coming from insight—it’s coming from being triggered. From feeling cornered. Instead of owning the discomfort, we mask it with superiority. But maturity means slowing down long enough to ask: “Am I reacting or responding?” One leads to deeper connection. The other leads to silence.

5. It Assumes You’re the Only One with the Map

No matter how much you’ve studied, lived, or seen, you don’t hold the monopoly on truth. Thinking others “don’t get it” because they see things differently? That’s not clarity—that’s tunnel vision. Real wisdom knows there’s more than one path to the top of the mountain.

6. It’s a Lost Chance for Connection

There’s always a moment—right before we drop the “you just don’t get it”—where we could choose empathy instead. Where we could lean in and say, *”Let me try that again.”

  • That moment matters. Because empathy isn’t about agreement. It’s about effort. And people remember when you made the effort.

7. It’s Not Wise—It’s Insecure

Look, if you’re really solid in your perspective, you won’t need to flex it. Confidence doesn’t belittle. It teaches. It shares. It invites others in. Those who weaponize “you just don’t get it” usually aren’t trying to elevate a conversation—they’re trying to avoid one.

Here’s the Real Talk

Saying “you just don’t get it” is a trap—and it catches the one who says it. It’s not a mark of depth. It’s a sign you’ve stopped digging. The good stuff—understanding, empathy, dialogue—all of that lives just past the urge to shut someone down.

So next time you’re tempted to pull that line out, pause. Breathe. Then choose the harder, better path: explain. Ask. Listen.

Because that’s how we move from walls to wisdom.
